“My adventures now are at once, more complex, subtle, and wrapped in penetrating challenge. The challenge is to make close-to-home adventure the real deal,” says Jason Albert in his delightful audio slide show Backyard World. Jason describes the choice that many of us make, to tend the homestead while others set their sights on bigger adventures, the kind that grab headlines.

There is a dilema that comes with adventuring. For one thing, as Albert points out, it can take a lot of fossil fuel to reach the farthest corners of the globe. I’ve heard it said that the base camp at Everest looks like the garbage-laced aftermath of Woodstock. To counteract this “ugly American” effect of expeditioneering, the Cleanest Line blog is encouraging outdoors lovers to seek adventure closer to home.

A few resources for those seeking adventure close to home:
The Outdoor Parent
REI Weekend Getaways
Sierra Club Inner City Outings

If you know of any other great ways to find adventure in your own back yard, feel free to drop a note in the Comments.
