5S Day Three: Shine (Seiso)

Today there is a feeling that something new is emerging. I’ve sorted through a bunch of junk. I’ve put a few things away, not just stashing them out of sight but truly finding a home for them.

Now it is time to shine. On Day One the heroic tool is the plastic tub, and for Day Two it is the pegboard, now the tool of the day is the Swiffer Duster.

The idea behind Seiso is more than just cleaning. It is a form of preventive maintenance. Dirt and grime can affect machinery and electronics, so they must be swept away. The time spent cleaning should be a time to check components, connections, fluid levels and the like.

Today I was able to clean about a quarter of my office, the part that isn’t buried in a pile of undifferentiated crapola. But I feel like I’ve opened the Chi somewhat.
