Summary: Apache Canyon Road (8N06) is flat, well graded ten mile stretch of road that winds through a Pinyon pine habitat back to the Nettle Spring campground. There are several creek crossings that could present a challenge after a rainy season. OHV Trail 103, Apache Canyon Corridor, follows a sandy wash to Nettle Springs and is a fun alternative to the Forest Service road.
How to Get There: From Ojai, California, take Highway 33 North past Lockwood Valley Road. Approximately two miles past Lockwood Valley Road you’ll come to a bridge over Apache Creek. Immediately past the bridge is Apache Canyon Road, marked by a brown Forest Service sign. Trail 103 starts immediately past the second cattle gate (counting the gate at the entrance as the first.) Here is a Google Map to Apache Canyon. Here is a kml file (copy link location and paste into Google Earth under Network Link.) Here is a Google Map of Trail 103.
Notes: Nettle Springs has primitive camping facilities with a pit toilet and fire rings. Fires, barbecues and stoves are allowed with permit only. You’ll need to bring your own water. This would be a nice alternative to camping at Ballinger Canyon because there is more shade and potentially fewer noisy ATVs.
Be sure to respect private ranch land in the area. No trespassing areas are clearly marked. Campfires are permitted in fire rings only, and only with a permit
