Best GPS for Hiking

I just got a hit from someone looking for “easiest gps for hiking and highways.” If any of my intrepid reader* knows the answer to this, please post a note in comments.

My guess is that we’re talking about something along the lines of the Garmin eTrex Legend CX Handheld GPS Navigator which uses uploadable maps, automatic route planning and turn-by-turn directions all in a rugged handheld unit with expandable memory.

Personally the thing I’m most interested in is the ability to export route data for sharing on the Trimble Outdoors Google Earth layer. I’m ready to step up from a bottom-rung Magellan eXplorist which has served me well, but can’t do some of the schmancier things you can do on the trail. In order to keep costs down I could do without a barometric pressure altimeter, thermometer, shaver and Evian water dispenser if need be.
