Popular Mechanics, the perennial bastion of testosterone, offers up 25 Skills Every Man Should Know. Some of the items on the list are editorial are no-brainers, such as Back Up a Trailer or Clean a Bolt-Action Rifle. Well, duh. Those are the basic minimums for manly behavior.
Some of the other entries border on wtf? Rescue a Boater Who Has Capsized? Ocean rescue is pretty manly, to be sure, but it’s hardly universal. I don’t think it rates anywhere close to the top 25, and especially shouldn’t come higher than how to tie a necktie or how to tip for drinks (US) or how to shout a round (UK and Ireland).
Other things on the list aren’t really manly at all. How to Retouch Digital Photos? Gimme a break. That’s awfully close to scrap booking don’t you think? Learning to blind stitch would have been a superior choice if you’re going to be drawing from the unisex bucket.
